Today we began class with our Do Now. We had to answer the question “What do you know about Egyptian pyramids?”. I led the discussion about different things that my classmates know about the pyramids. After the discussion, we watched a powerpoint about the Egyptian pyramids. It showed different facts such as how many pyramids there are, when they were built, and what they were used for. The end of the powerpoint showed the central historical question which was “Did Slaves build the Great Pyramid at Giza?”. Next, we wrote in our double entry journals whether or not we thought that slaves built the Great Pyramid at Giza.
We were then given a document about a greek historian named Herodotus. In 440 BCE he wrote the book The Histories. We talked about why Herodotus wrote the book, what his perspective was, and if there was bias in his story based on who he interviewed. The sheet of paper we were given had an excerpt from The Histories and also had an excerpt from a textbook called Our World Through the Ages. After that, we highlighted parts of the text that we thought answered the questions at the bottom of the document and we also actually answered the questions. We also began to fill out a chart based on the info from the two documents. Finally, we wrote a symbol on the corners of our papers that showed how well we felt we could work with this information.
Here s a link to the powerpoint we talked about in the beginning of class.
Homework: Tonight we have to read and complete the work for Document C and fill out the section for that document in the graphic organizer.
