Please note that this is in no way meant to take offense to Eric Garner, his family, or the NYPD. This is simply an overview of the video I saw in class.
Class started with all of the chairs in a circle around the room. We all took a seat in this unusual layout and began the lesson. Ms. Dordoni had us do the Do Now, which consisted of about one or two questions for our Double Entry Journals.
We were asked what we knew about the Eric Garner case. I didn’t know anything about who he was or why he was significant, but I did recall hearing the name before. After about five or ten minutes, Ms. Dordoni had us stop writing and Mr. Parke began a backstory on Eric Garner. He was a man who died the other day because of a chokehold and chest compressions put on him by a NYPD (New York Police Department) cop. He had been supposedly harassed by cops before because he was selling loose cigarettes. At one point a cop put him into a chokehold and killed him, whether accidentally or purposely.

Mr. Parke finished his background information and Ms. Dordoni pulled up a video on her computer. She warned us that the filmer said a bit of obscene language in one part and said we were allowed to leave the room if that offended us. She then pressed play and showed us the video taken by a cell phone. [Link to video is on first slide of Do Now link above] The man in the green shirt with the 99 on it is a NYPD cop. The cops also did not appear to be trying to get the first cop off of Eric Garner. We watched both videos, taken from different vantage points. Afterwards we began small group discussions with our groups from the Civilizations Project. My group and I sat and discussed how this wasn’t the first case and that the response on both the NYPD and the Paramedic’s part was very poor, and may have been purposely done so that way. We went back into our groups, not dragging our chairs so as not to disturb Ms. Barrios' class downstairs, and we discussed our reactions to the video and what our groups said. We ran out of time in the middle of our discussion, so we had to end it abruptly, very much so like this lengthy paragraph.
Why is this lesson important to our learning?
This lesson is very important to our learning because we need to learn about racial profiling and about how this kind of event affects the lives of so many other people.
What does it have to do with social studies?
This has to do with social studies because, well, its in the name. This event affected people all over the U.S., and protests held in major and minor cities and towns have proof of that. This is a study not only of Eric Garner and the cop who killed him, but also of the people protesting the result of the Eric Garner court case.
