Hi everyone! Today class began with a Do-Now different from usual. Ms. Dordoni reviewed a question with our class to help us better understand how to depict questions and to help us have a successful debate. The question asked was What causes change? Our class sat in a big circle and discussed the many different answers we came up with. One thing that as a class we can improve upon is answering the question directly with a couple of examples with a source. A couple keys components for having a successful debate is to include specific examples that directly connect to the question, make sure you cite or source your information. This lesson is important to our learning because it could help us cite evidence which is very useful to a lot of jobs, and also taught us how to properly view a question and how to have a successful debate ,make connections between various things which will help not only our work within the debates but our work for other classes.
After we finished our Do-Now we began the first rounds of the practice debates.
The first groups question was What does it mean to be civilized? Some of our responses ranged from civilized means to be a group of people working together to create something to civilized means to be an advanced technology, well organized work force, and large population.
When their time was up Ms.Dordoni gave feedback to the whole class. She told them things they could improve in, things they did well in, and if they needed to improve something how to do it.
This has to do with social studies because history and social studies is all based off of change. Change is what created civilizations and it has been present since the homo habilis, to the ancient egyptians, to present day. Studying that change and being able to understand it is important because we can learn how and why civilizations change and why they collapse and we can figure out how to prevent that from the future.
Homework: Prepare flash cards for Monday's debate!
Links to Key Terms:
Codified Laws- An organization of laws or rules officially written down.
Examples~ Hammurabi's code, Mandate of heaven, 10 commandments.
Change-Something that causes a transition or a difference.
Examples~ Codified laws, in our homes we do not have codified but in settings where the population changes and is bigger we need to have codified laws because of the change in population, race, religion, and many other factors.
Civilization- the stage of human social development and organization that is considered most advanced.
Examples~ School, America, South Orange
