We started class today by coming in and being assigned to a new group. We had a Do Now, where we were to copy down the learning target which was,” I will choose an expert topic to research as a part of an Early River Valley Civilization and choose 3 print resources based on how info is presented,” and answer a question about what makes up a civilization. As a class we shared out what we thought made up a civilization. This was really helpful to me because I got to hear other peoples ideas. During this portion Josh lead the class which was fun to watch, and from there Ms. Dordoni explained how for today she would not be running the class! Instead, we were going to start becoming experts on a topic for a research project that corresponded with the civilization we were assigned to in the beginning, teaching ourselves through the use of resources and once the projects were finished we would learn from our peers.
We reviewed the types of resources that we can use for this project and for future work, sequential, comparative, and causal. I knew that there were different types of resources but was unaware of the exact categories they can fell into and what they meant.
For the rest of the class we thought about which of the topics we wanted to become experts on. We were also asked to skim the books and use post it notes labeling areas we thought would be informative to anyone in our group for any of the different subjects. This will be really helpful when we continue researching our specific topics because the we won’t have to go through all of the resources to find information that will help us with our focused topics.
This project is important to our learning because it helps us to learn how to focus in on certain ideas and topics based off a larger subject, and allows us to gain knowledge from others on a different topic that we are less familiar with. The project relates to social studies because it was a time during history when humans started to evolve and start doing different things. Without the changing of early civilizations we wouldn’t be same today and the world would be very different. I’m curious to learn about all of the different early civilizations because they are somehow all related and have done similar things in order to survive.
