Today Ms. Dordoni was out, but we had many documents, graphic organizers, and questions to fill out in preparation for our debate on Monday. We will be debating if the benefit of building the Great Wall of China outweighed the cost. The substitute first gave “The Great Wall of China: Did the Benefits Outweigh the Costs?” packet which consisted of seven documents with corresponding questions. For this packet we were allowed to work with others so that we could complete the document without reading every single document. I think this was helpful because we were able to gather all of the necessary information while not having to read every detail of the document. The class was also given a pro/con graphic organizer to fill out while reading the packet to prepare for the debate as well as an assessment student checklist that will be used during the debate to assess the team members. Yesterday’s class work, both the comparing and contrasting worksheet and the document questions/connections, were collected by the substitute.
Reading these documents about the Great Wall of China is important to our learning because while it is considered “one of the man-made wonders of the world” it is also controversial since there were many sacrifices made, including people’s lives, that had to be made in order to create this huge wall. Being informed about this can help us to further understand the benefits and costs of the wall and other things alike that may be controversial. The purpose of learning about China in general ties into our Statement of Inquiry: Growth and Power are requisite conditions for the development of exemplary civilizations because early dynasties in China were powerful which helped them to develop into a civilization. This relates to social studies because there have been many civilizations throughout history and it is important to be educated about them since they have influenced the way our modern civilizations are today.
