Today in class we watched a video called "Little Things Are Big". The voice in the video is of Jesús Colón. Jesús Colón was a newspaper man in the 1950s and the founder of the Nuyorican movement. The movement is the equivalent of the Harlem Renaissance for people of Hispanic descent.
In the video, Colón talks about two things: the racial divide in the 1950s and how he lost his dignity. In one of the most important events in his life when he did not help a young white woman with her children, he talks about how potential racism made him fearful of her reaction toward his help. Instead of helping her, Colón becomes afraid and ashamed and runs away as fast as he can. In failing to assist the woman, he feels that he lost his dignity.
Homework:
Reflection in Double-entry Journal: Think of the decision that Jesúse Colon made in Little Things are Big. Describe an instance when you made a decision based on how you thought you were perceived and tell how the decision affected you.
