Class started with the Do-Now. We copied down a chart for the homework due tomorrow. The information we need to put in our DEJs is on Edmodo and below on the blog. We then went on to start working on our Creation myth essays. We were given Essay Outlines to help us brainstorm what we might put into our essays. These may come in handy for people who want to plan their essay before attempting to write the first draft, so here’s a link to the document:

We also were given a Graphic Organizer that contained information on all of the Creation myths, that we will use for the comparison in our essays. Our essay is meant to be a reflection on the entire lesson, so in the essay, we link the creation myths to the story we heard from Jesus Colon.
In the essay, we are asked to compare the creation myths of two or more different civilizations (Doing three does NOT give you a better grade. Do three if you feel like two isn’t enough of a challenge). To do this we will need to compare how each of the civilizations viewed themselves, the animals and other life, as well as how they picture the world around them. We will need to use information from the Graphic Organizer, our previous experiences with other cultures, and an understanding of what life was and/or is for the people who made these myths.

This lesson will give us a deeper understanding of the civilization, the people of the civilization, and maybe even ourselves by exploring what these people behind these myths thought about themselves. And isn’t that what social studies is all about? Learning more about other cultures to more deeply understand ours? Class ended with us finishing the Essay Outline.
Homework:
DUE TOMORROW:
Create a chart, illustration, notes or something else in your Double Entry Journal that tells:
1. What hominids are;
2. Both similarities and differences between homo habilis, homo erectus, and homo sapiens (definition and what they can do that distinguishes one from the other);
3. When they existed (you can use a timeline)
4. Source (where did you get your information?) [If using internet sources, you must CORROBORATE 2. One must be from a site:edu search!]
If you were not in class today or did not finish the essay outline in the class period, then finishing it is homework!
